Schmalzler

Schmalzler is a coarse snuff very common in the Southern parts of German speaking Europe. It is made from especially piquant tobacco leaves, and subjected to a complex and time consuming process of fermentation. It is distinguished by profound and complex flavours.

Since the tobacco is ground to a slightly coarser grain size, oil is added in order to prevent irritations to the nose.

In former times, this type of snuff used to be greased with butter oil (in German: "schmalz"), hence it´s name.
